:: first maternity check-up ::

Yesterday evening I had my first prenatal check-up. Our company's insurance coverage only allows us to do check-ups at specialists after 7 months pregnant so below that we have to get the regular check-ups at any panel clinics, except if you're having complication. We decided to visit our regular clinic at SS19 because it operates 24 hours a day and there usually not many people waiting at a time. They also have the ultrasound facility, so we thought it would be much easier. I've asked other colleagues, they said any clinic will do because it's just a standard check-up. So okeylah kot.
Papa & Mama to be ;-)

When we met the doctor I told him that I wanted to have a pregnancy check-up. He thought it was the urine test, so we corrected him and explained we wanted to have the regular monthly one since I'm already pregnant for 3 months. He looked a bit blur for few seconds and said "why don't you register at klinik kesihatan instead?". Bee told him that we intended to go to SJMC (or now Sime Darby Medical Centre) but we're only allowed at 7 months and above, so we have to do it at any clinic. Listening to that, he then checked my blood pressure, under eye and tongue (?). He said my blood pressure was a bit low and he will give me vitamin. I asked for calcium but he resisted and told me to drink milk instead. So that ended the session. I was then given a pack of folic acid for supplement and 3 sachets of dehydration salt to increase my blood pressure.

Okay, I may not have any idea about how prenatal check-up is, but that session was not very convincing to me. Experienced mothers out there, is it normally like that? Because if not, I'm thinking of going to another clinic at my office next week. By the way, time seems to fly pretty fast as I'm entering the 12th week this coming week and it'll be second trimister in another 2 weeks later. Hopefully our baby is doing well inside there... ihiks.

atie, Isma x der ler experience pregnant, but being involved with "hospital environtment" dan kwn2 yg pregnant last time, Isma tau ler sdkt2.
Klu kat penang, even kita nk wat mnthly check up kat private practice, preggy mum kena pi report kat Klinik kesihatan dlm daerah diaorg tinggal tuk dptkn "Buku merah". Pas tu terplgler kat kita nk ke mana2 tuk check-up. Kwn Isma penah citer gak kat Klang ada satu pusat bersalin yg gynae dia adlh perempuan muslim. Klu bermnt Isma leh tlg tnyakn. Urm ni ler info yg x seberapa. Sorry gak klu x membantu.

Thanks so much Isma! Info yg sgt2 berguna dan membantu. Mak mertua kite pun ada mention suruh register kat pusat kesihatan jugak. Itulah yang kelmarin tu kite sgt was-was dgn check-up nya... maybe sbb klinik bese kan. Kalau gynae diorg mmg dah bese so maybe ada standard procedure sbb kalu baca yg oversea punya mmg details every check-up. Nanti Isma tanyakan kawan Isma tu juga yer... thanksss so much dear.

hmmm...hmmm...saya dulu masa 1st check-up, my gynae dah terus buat ultra-sound coz nak tengok kedudukan baby kat mana and nak measure size dia. check blood pressure tu normal. each time buat check-up dia akan check. but checking under eye and tongue? itu agak pelik la for pregnancy monthly check-up. itu kalau nak check demam and yang sama waktu dengannya la. macam my gynae dulu selalu la tanya ada apa-apa masalah tak for the first trimester. ada sakit masa nak buang air ke, sakit kat between our private part and abdomen ke. a bit details la dia tanya. masa first check-up dulu my gynae dah terus bagi folic acid, calcium & vitamin. susu pun dia suruh minum juga. hmmm...tu je la kut info yang boleh diberikan. kalo ada termiss apa-apa nanti saya inform later k. eh...terpanjang lak komen...

@qistory: thanks sbb share experience. tgk tu mcm2 yg ditanya & diperiksa. yg kite gi tu mmg mcm cek org demam je. itupun adiel yg suruh die doctor check blood pressure, kalu tak stakat cek mata & lidah jerlaa. mintak calcium pun x bagi plak... haisy mmg konfem nak gi klinik lain. kononnya gi klinik dekat umah bleh gi dgn cik abang. nampaknya gi klinik kat opis ni jerla senang sbb rupa2nya klinik sini mcm2 ada...

My dear,
For first pregnancy, I advice you to go for checkups at klinik kesihatan and get the buku merah just in case any complication happened and you need to refer to govt hospitals, the process will be easier. When you reach 7 months, you can change and go to SJMC for monthly checkup. Plus, I think klinik kesihatan do more check for example keeping track of your weight and height, urine test for protein, HB/hemoglobin test, test for diabetes, they ask for dental checkup as well and they will check your baby's position inside the tummy just by touching your belly. Usually no ultrasound unless u go to the bigger clinic. The nurses are very friendly and knowledgeable and they are breastfeeding friendly! They will give you advice on how to prepare yourself for breastfeeding. :)

Thanks for sharing bebeyh. Aku pun rasa klinik kesihatan ibu2 mengandung is the best tapi nak tunggu turn la tak larat. Kawan husband aku teman wife dia last time, gi pepagi buta pun dapat nombor dah puluh2 then tghari baru dpt jumpa doc. Semalam aku gi klinik kat opis aku diorg pun ada buku gak. Tapi mak mertua still advise utk register dgn nearest klinik kesihatan sbb takut apa2 senang katanya.
