If you are a regular reader you would know how passionate I am with art & craft, especially in making DIY stuff. I got all excited looking at colourful papers and ribbons and beads and neverending craft supplies. Sometimes or to be more honest, most of the time I will just buy fabrics, beads, ribbons and papers just because they are so colourful and pretty. Buy first, think later. I always believe one day they are useful and can be used to create something. I still own threads, ribbons and beads I bought since secondary school so as years passed by the collection grew bigger and bigger. My box containers were overflown with stuff and so I decided to have my own little craft closet to fit in all the supplies.

Space is limited because the craft closet is part of the walk-in wardrobe room. I needed a customised system to categorise stuff and keep them separately, so where else can we find nice, affordable furniture if it's not in Ikea. Everything was built from scratch. The single door PAX system, shelves, drawer and magnetic bar were installed in-house with assistance from my hubby. I was so happy and satisfied with the end result. I can just open the door and stare at all those stuff to make me smile.

There are three (3) boxes to keep different categories of stuff, a shelf for my mini sewing machine and I love the magnetic bar that holds my tools. Other accessories were mostly from Ikea too (well if you're a fan of Ikea you would have noticed it ^__^). In the hanging cups are stationaries, craft scissors and Sharpies, meanwhile remnants of ribbons and yarns are kept in glass jars. I also bought stuff from Daiso too. Used a lot of their ziploc bags to organise and segregate small papers, stickers and other small stuff, as well as beads organisers to keep the bits and bobs.

To personalise the closet I labelled the boxes with my own handwriting and framed a so-called inspirational quote that crossed my mind, which is also a self reminder to me.

Ady Rifqi turns three (3) on 17th June 2014.

 

 

THE PLAN

Few months before his birthday we have decided to throw a birthday celebration for him. He had his first birthday party when he turned one, but we did not have any celebration when he was two except for cake-cutting. I have been wanting to plan, decorate and host my son's party - it's among one of many things in my bucket list and it made me so excited. The first thing I did was asking Ady what theme he would like for his party. He loved Thomas and Friends and have started playing Lego so I asked his preference between the two. I asked the question once in between few days and even rotated either with Thomas or Lego as the first preference because sometimes kids give answer to the first thing they heard. Being Ady he always knows what he wants, and he answered Thomas every single time, so that's it. He will be having a Thomas-themed birthday party.

 

The party was planned to be held on Saturday, 21st June 2014 at our own crib. I have informed closed family members and friends to save the date earlier and one month before the actual date, an invitation was sent to guests through Facebook calendar of event and mobile messages. The colour code was based on Thomas' main colours - red, blue & white. Party checklist was all in my head and since then I started wearing my party planner hat when ever I had the free time. Until the day arrived, together with my husband we completed everything in the checklist:

 

1. Personalisation is important. With a bit of research I came up with a 'branding' for Ady Rifqi's 3rd Birthday Party. Instead of colourful cartoon design I wanted something that is simple and urban so I played with stripes, polka dots and chevron. After getting approval from the other half (it's a team affair, always remember to consult the co-organiser :-D) then only the actual designing and printing works started.

 

2. Designed and printed out our own party labels for the mineral water. It is an advantage that the company I'm working for produces mineral water in small bottles so I bought them and replaced with our own party labels.

 

3. Using the similar design we printed out stickers and printed materials for other party stuff such as garlands, table decorations, party favours, etc.

 

4. A guest book is a must. Instead of buying a ready-made or producing one with coloured papers (which I did for Ady's first birthday) I made a mini photobook via photobook.com.my. The photobook contains Ady's photos since day one and blank pages for guests to write.

 

5. Bookings and orders for cake, desserts, caterer for F&B, clown and photographer. Fila voluntereed to purchase and bring the helium baloons (thank you so much babe!).

 

6. Prepared party favours in goodies bags for the kids. I felt so lucky when I found polka dots paper bags in red and blue at Mydin USJ 1. It was the cutest and the most acceptable design available there. Did candy shopping at their wholesale area too. We had two types of bags. Red bag is for younger kids which contained a tub of mini playdoh and candies (mini chupa chups, mini mentos, mini m&ms and granola bars). Blue bag is for the not-so-young kids which contained a set of colour pencils, customised Thomas colouring sheet, a snack and almost similar candies.

 

7. Designed and printed photo props, but Nor assisted to prepare them on hard papers and sticks (arigato gozaimasu cik Nor!).

 

 

 

 

D-DAY

Hubby and I started arranging furnitures and decorating the corridor since early morning. We turned our dining table to a cake / candy buffet by wrapping it with papers. We placed everything necessary on the table and made paper garlands backdrop. There was a dedicated table for the photo props and guestbook, complete with colourful sharpies and stickers. The caterer arrived early and we had two big round tables for the guests. We ordered roti jala with chicken curry, singapore fried noodle, chicken drummets, nuggets and cordial drink. My mother-in-law voluntereed to prepare teh tarik and my mom brought coconut jelly all the way from Seremban. As for desserts we have the birthday cake, cupcakes, blueberry cheese tarts, mini donuts, 'love letters' and candies.

 

We managed to complete decorating just in time before the scheduled timing, 3:00 pm. Guests started coming followed by clown and photographers. Everything went on according to plan, only that it was such a hot and sunny day. We did not rent any tent so most guests had to mingle and stay inside the house. It was a bit crampy and we really apologise for such inconvenient. The birthday boy on another hand did not take his afternoon nap because he was too excited so he was a bit cranky during the party. He also got very excited accepting gifts which he proudly opened one after another. Note to parents - please accept birthday gifts and keep them in a room during birthday party to avoid similar experience.

 

 

 We had cake cutting, followed by party game led by the clown. The only time Ady happily participated was during dance session because the clown played his favourite tune - Gangnam Style. He danced to that song from beginning to the end.

 

Most guests left home by 6:30 pm. We started packing and cleaning after that. Everybody left except my family members as they spent a night with us (and helped finishing some of the food... haha.)

 

It was a memorable day for us and I have another checked item in my bucket list, Alhamdulillah. I realised I didn't get the chance to have long conversation with all guests, but hopefully they enjoyed each other's company and the experience. To family members, friends, neighbours and colleagues, we THANK YOU for spending your time with us. As the hosts, we sincerely apologise for any inconvenience occured. On behalf of the birthday boy, we appreciate all the gifts. Ady received Thomas & Friends playset and tableware, Hot Wheels playsets, a huge toy truck with cars, educational toys, building blocks, a lot of clothes and even cash (already deposited into his personal account). We did not expect that but thank you, thank you, thank you everyone.

To our lil boy Ady Rifqi, you're growing up too fast baby. You have cherished every single day of our life since day one and our prayers are always with you. May you grow up to be a good muslim and continue to be a good son. No word could ever describe how much you mean to both of us and we promise to take care of you as long as we live.

:: diy nautical rope belt ::

Sunday is already here and I have been staying up through out the night to maximise my weekend. Life is too short - workloads are killing me softly. I wish time moves slower on Saturday and Sunday so I could spend longer time with my loved ones and also, myself.

Spending time with myself either means surfing the internet, blogging or connecting with my creativity. Nothing much but I hardly get the chance to complete all three during a weekend. Even surfing the internet for casual reading is challenging during weekdays. Ah, put that aside. Let just continue to the most recent DIY project I did during the long weekend of Chinese New Year celebration.

Firstly, the project is actually inspired from this image found on the Internet:

 

Accesssories made from rope is always in fashion trend. The look is unique and casual, yet can be eye-catching depends on the material, colour and combination. Since a year ago, I have read a number of tutorials for rope necklaces made by DIY queens. During my last visit to the craft shop I finally remember to buy a rope for the project - but instead of necklace I decided to create a belt.

 

Materials used:

- 1 meter gold rope

- Gold satin ribon

- Rubber strap

- Velcro

- UHU glue

- Needle & thread

 

Steps involved:
1. Fold the rope once to make it double and knot the rope as in diagram above. One end of the rope is in a loop while another is split end.

2. For the split end, attach ribbon with glue at end of each rope. Measure rubber strap around waist and cut according to comfort. Attach the rubber strap by sewing to the ribbons.

3. At another end, fold the rubber strap into the rope loop. Adjust and attach velcro by sewing to the rubber. The end.


How simple is that? I wish I have bought more ropes in different colours so I could have another belt in two colours combination. Besides that, I am also inspired with this DIY project and thinking of making it.

Rope is surely in my next shopping list!

:: the first of 2014 ::

After a long disappearance I suddenly become a frequent blogger (not). Actually I didn't switch off this laptop after publishing the last blog entry for 2013 although after hitting the 'publish' button we all went out to view fireworks on a flyover - had nasi lemak at Warung Nasi Lemak Opah in Taipan USJ area - came back playing with Ady and finishing up a DIY project - but since the laptop is still alive, I want to take this opportunity to publish the first entry of 2014.

We welcomed the new year on the flyover of USJ to Sunway route. We did it for the first time in 2013 so this is the second year and having the chance to view most fireworks displayed in the Klang Valley area from the spot is all we need. No entertainment required. Just waited in the car, went out of the car merely 2-3 minutes before the clock strikes 12:00, enjoyed the view, snapped few photos and off we go when the sky turned dark again. Back in the old days my definition of new year celebration was hanging out at the KLCC park enjoying performance and watching fireworks on top of my head but that definition is no longer available these days. I don't mind admitting what I did in the past - they all remain in memory and I'm blissful with the life I'm having now as an adult, a wife and a mother. I'm not sure what kind of blog post I'm writing here so before I ramble further here is my first pic for the year 2014:

My eyes couldn't sleep through out the night. Before started writing this post I just finished creating a headpiece for a ballerina. I received an order from someone at the office for her daughter ballet performance. I know nothing about ballet so I have asked the customer to share pic of a sample as well as the attire. The colour combo is gold and blue; and this is how the end result looks like:

So there goes my six hours of day one in 2014. Wishing and hoping for wonderful, blessed and healthy 364 days ahead.

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2014!

:: create your own watch strap ::

Just like other weekends, I stayed up late last night to have my own sweet me-time. I went into my little wardrobe room looking at things and there were the watches, one of it with the handmade studded strap I have made and blogged about many months ago. I was actually looking for an activity and when my eyes saw this particular watch, given by my-then-boyfriend-now-hubby for my birthday many years ago I somehow got a "light bulb" (just like how Gru said it in Despicable Me, if you noticed the scene). The watch has three sets of interchangable straps in white, black and monogram; and me being me, decided to make the fourth one in red so I could match it with my red outfit next time :-P

It is just a simple one actually, made in less than 30 minutes but the key message that I am sharing here is creating our own watch strap according to our taste, colour, preference and theme is limitless. All we need is a bit of time and effort. 

 

3 basic items needed:

1. Felt fabric for the strap (other materials: leather, ribbon, printed fabrics)

2. Velcro to secure the strap

3. Ribbon as the deco (other materials: buttons, studs, crystals, etc)

 

3 easy steps involved:

1. Cut the fabric into a long strap

2. Sew the ribbon to the strap

3.  Stick velcro at each end

 

Easy? ;-)

:: handmade fabric flower brooch ::

We had a long weekend last week due to Malaysia Day - 16th September public holiday. It was a fruitful weekend to me because after many months I managed to touch base with my favourite pastime, which is making accessories. The urge of making something usually comes either after I saw inspiring pretty stuff or when ever I'm in need of having one because I want to wear it to an event or to office, but last week was different. I have been craving to produce something because I haven't make one in many, many months. I really missed my hobby and I was truly satisfied when I managed to make these out of whatever fabrics and beads available in my craft box:

The chiffons are leftovers collected from my mother-in-law whereas the black nets were bought for our wedding deco back in 2009 (this is one positive thing of being a hoarder - LOL).

 

The flower was not difficult to make actually, but the preparation part was a bit boring because I had to cut the fabrics into circles. To ease the process I made a circle-shaped paper guide so I could cut the fabrics faster and easily. Five (5) sets of chiffon fabrics and nets were prepared for the petals and a circle shaped felt was prepared for the base.

Basic "ingredients"

 

A set of fabric and net was folded into half circle. Each left and right side was folded inside to create a cone shape petal and sewed onto the felt. All five petals were arranged and sewed next to each other to form a complete flower before it was decorated with crystals in the middle and a pin on the back to turn it into a brooch.

 

The End... and craving managed to be satisfied :-)

:: handmade studded watch strap ::

One of my favourite watch lost its leather strap last month and I have been planning to change the strap but always forgot to bring it to the shop. Out of nowhere I somehow got this idea to make my own DIY watch strap using whatever items available in my art and crafts box. It was an impromptu idea. Made it last Tuesday and it took me less than 30 minutes to give my old watch a new look.

1. Materials used:
- Strong Glue
- Felt Fabric
- Velcro
- Studs (bought from H&M for RM19.90 per pack - also available in silver and multicolour)
- Watch

2. Cut two straps of felt according to watch size and measure the length according to wrist size. Slip the straps inside the strap holders and glue one end at the back of each strap.

3. Push in the studs into the felt and secure the claws.

4. Front view of the straps with studs.

5. Glue velcro at the end of each strap.

6. All done and ready to go.

:: chiffon flower corsage diy ::

I have not done any DIY project ever since we moved to the new house since end of November last year but after meeting a friend and saw her fluffy fabric corsage last week I got inspired to return to the crafty world. All these while, most of my DIY projects involved felt cloth because felt is cheap (bought it at Daiso, only RM5 for a huge piece) but when Diana said she made hers using remnants bought at fabric store I said to myself "why didn't I think of that before?". Fabric corsage looks more sophisticated and formal than felt so it is a must have because it can helps to enhance any plain shirt.

Instead of buying remnants from the shop I however sought some from my mother-in-law who apparently has three bags full of fabrics leftovers. From several pieces of fabrics I took, the one that attracted me the most was this particular three tone chiffon in my favourite shades of green-white-pink. At first I wanted to make similar corsage like Diana did, which she already shared the YouTube tutorial on my FB page but while searching the internet I found another tutorial, went on with that one and happy with the end result that look like this:

It may look complicated but it is not that hard to make. Items needed are:

- Long piece of fabric (chiffon, polyester or any soft fabric)
- Needle and thread
- Small piece of felt in circle shape
- Decorations for flower center: beads / crystals / buttons / sequins
- Glue
- Pin


Steps:

1. Fold the fabric downward and sew all the way at the bottom from one end to another. Length and size of the fabric determines size of the flower. No need to sew it nicely because the intention is to pull the thread and produce ruffles as below.

2. When ruffles are created, roll the fabric in spiral to create a flower. Secure the base with glue or sew with thread.

3. Attach the circle shape felt to the flower base with glue, then attach pin to the felt as below.

4. End with decoration of your choice on the center of the flower.

Using the same technique, I also made a small brooch for my mother-in-law as a way to say thank you for the pretty fabrics :-)

I still have few more fabrics to work with. Will try to make different one next and update if the project is a success. Stay tune!

:: diy - shoe clips & shoe deco ::

I wear heels to office almost every working day but flat shoes are my essential wear during weekends. I bought a number of flats during pregnancy and still wearing them until today. Among my favourites are these identical flats from Bonita but due to frequent wearing, both of them have become worn out and the white one just lost the blingz two weeks ago *sad*.

 

 

I know I have to depart with the grey one but the white one is still in wearable condition so last Sunday night I decided to do something with both of them.

 

First, I cut off both blingz from the grey shoes because they are still in good condition. Instead of sticking them permanently on another shoe, I decided to make a shoe clip which is more convenient as it is transferable. I already bought some clip earrings some time ago so I stick them at the back of the ribbons using UHU glue and stick a layer of felt on top of the metals to hold them stronger and voila, the shoe clips are done. Now I can decorate any plain shoe without any hassle.

 

 

So, what happened to the white flats?

 

The same process was done to it where I cut off the blingz and whatever was left. Using a green gross grain ribbon, I made a pair of loop straps and also a pair of pompom flowers using white felt. I put a crystal bead in the middle of the flower just to enhance it and sew the flower on top of the ribbons. At 3:00 am last Sunday night I became a cobbler by sewing the decorations to the shoes and ta-daaa... the shoes went through a makeover and able to meet the sun again soon!

I may not watch malay tv series but thanks to Facebook I am usually updated with what many people (especially my ladies friends) are up to. The latest and current craze among tv series lovers is no other than this series named Adam & Hawa, which is an adaptation from a novel. So when you might be addicted to watching Adam & Hawa, let me tell you that I am also addicted to something and that is.....

.....painting crystal bangles with nail polish.

I went to the Max Value shop the other day and found those green crystal bangles at only RM1.00 each. I have learnt from other DIY bloggers on how useful nail polish is so I decided to turn those green blings into candy / pop coloured bracelets that are more suitable for my needs by painting them with nail polish from Elianto. The painting job is addictive and so far I have been making four candy / pop coloured bracelets. 

This kind of look is trending right now and I have seen some pretty ones from H&M and Diva. If I have the opportunity and since I already got nail polish in yellow and pink, I intend to turn the bracelets into necklaces similar to these colourful candies from H&M:

:: diy - colourful thread bangles ::

Lately I have spent most of the nights bloghopping from one fashion DIY blog to another. For someone who has passion in DIY stuff, flipping through the blog pages left me in awe because there were lots of brilliant projects out there. I got really inspired and sometimes amazed with their creativity, like "where on earth did she get that fantastic idea from?". Despite being inspired and all, time constraint limits me to try the projects although I have planned to execute some. So far I have only managed to do this particular one because the resources were all available and it did not consume much time. This is a perfect project for those who are thinking of giving your good old bangles a facelift. Rather than leaving them in the dark, change their look according to your current taste and do not be surprised if they somehow become your favourites before you know it (like what had happened to me). To cut the story short, here it goes - the tutorial for Colourful Thread Bangles inspired from Rags to Couture.

Items Required:

- colourful cross stitch threads

- bangles

- glue

Steps:

1. Choose combination of thread colours according to own preference. Glue at a spot inside the bangle and start rolling the thread tightly around it.

2. End the first coloured thread by sticking it on a spot of glue inside the bangle and snip off the balance with scissors. Repeat the same process with the second coloured thread and so on.

3. Roll the thread tightly around the bangle until complete and you're done!

4. The end result, before and after.

My new bangles look better now than earlier. Actually I did not have any old bangles so I bought the metal bangles from a RM2 shop and it came in a stack of six. Two are thicker ones and both were fully wrapped with thread while the thinner ones were half wrapped for a different look. On another note, that cross stitch threads are sentimental value to me because they were given by my beloved late grandmother. She has passed away for seven years and I have kept that threads longer and vowed to use it for something really good. I have no regret in using them for this project and that bangles would definitely be a keeper, forever.

:: pimp your headband ::

Thank God weekend is finally here. It was a week packed with events so I am looking forward to get some rest and spend quality time with my loved ones. Managed completing few chores tonight from sweeping to mopping to doing laundry and folding clothes but Friday night should be more than that. I thought I deserved to do something I like so I took out my two 'best buddies', scissors and UHU glue for a lil project.

A colleague requested me to pimp or in a proper word - enhance a headband she bought for her daughter. After two weeks, the right time finally arrived and with assistance from some ribbons, felt cloth and a flower bead...



...a simple headband got itself a makeover...





Just a simple one there but hopefully perfect for her lil daughter ;-)

:: what can be made with lace leftovers ::

When I went back to my home town last time I did a bit of spring cleaning in the closet and found a bag filled with remnants of fabrics from my wedding dress. There were balance of lace, net and satin which could be useful so I decided to bring them back home. On one Sunday night in early September I had some free time. Ady was already asleep and hubby was out with his friend so I thought of making something. Remembering about the remnants, I somehow got an idea and brought out the fabrics and necessary tools. Since I already own a handful of handmade necklace, the little something I made that night was different because it was a...

It took me around 30 minutes to get the end product. It was a simple project and just nice to fulfill leisure time before bed on a Sunday night. Here, let me show you the tutorial of making a lace headband using lace remnants.

 

1. Items required:
- Lace fabric
- Felt cloth
- Ribbons
- Velcro
- Needle
- Thread
- Fabric / multipurpose glue

2. Place the lace on top of felt cloth and secure with few needles. Identify the area to be used, preferably a patch of flower and sew nicely along the shape.

3. Cut along the shape.

4.  Measure ribbon on your head and attach it to the pattern with glue (UHU is my all-time favourite). Stick velcro at each end of the ribbon and voila, a lace headband is ready to be worn on the hair or on top of hijab as additional accessory :-)


Thought I would end this entry with one DIY project but no, it is not over yet. Last week when I was in PIL's house I saw a strap of pretty bold lace on my MIL's jubah sleeve. I have been searching for that kind of lace but have not find it anywhere here so I asked my MIL where did she get it. Turned out it was bought during her trip to Japan earlier this year. My MIL who must have known about my interest was kind enough to measure the lace on her jubah sleeves and lucky enough, there was a small balance just nice to make a piece of accessory. A handful of necklace is never enough in a lady's closet so last night; on another Sunday midnight another handmade necklace was born.

Didn't do much because the lace is already bold and beautiful. I just bought the chain from Ace Hardware (RM7.50 per metre but only use half metre) and carefully attached each end to the lace with needle and thread. Couldn't resist it so I straightaway wore the necklace to the office today. I was one happy lady *ngeeeee*. Wish I could get more of that lace so please let me know if you knew where I can get in here in Malaysia.

So there it goes. Two DIY items made of lace leftovers for inspirations. Actually we can do a lot more things with lace remnants such as decorating a plain tee or a handbag and turning it into a brooch or a bracelet. With time and a bit of creativity you may surprise with your own capability so let's start making something today :-)

tutorial: rainbow bling2 bib necklace

Since becoming a mother, leisure time is very precious and I always argue with myself on how I should spend it (yes, I'm almost similar to the Grinch who schedule time with himself) but in the end I will sit on the couch or inside my playroom producing something with the help of scissors and UHU glue. I just love making accessories because it gives me satisfaction and honestly, wearing something you made by your own; no matter how weird it is feels different and greater than wearing something you purchased.

The other day we went to this store named Mr. DIY in Summit USJ. I tell you, that shop is awesome because it sells everything from hardware, kitchen stuff, stationeries, gifts, plasticware and you name it all at cheaper price. While looking around, I found a section for handphone accessories and a light bulb shining on my head because that is how I got the idea for the project that I am sharing with you guys today.

What I used:
- Black felt cloth
- Colourful crystal stickers (bought from Mr. DIY at RM3.30 per pack) 
- Black ribbon
- UHU glue
- Scissors

Step-by-Step:
1. Fold the felt cloth into two.
2. Cut to make a crescent shape as in photo.
3. Stick the crystals and glue ribbons at both top joins.

Tips:
- Ease your mind and arrange the crystals freely.
- Arrange the crystals first and snap a photo for reference before you stick them permanently.
- Instead of using glue, sew the ribbons to keep it long lasting.


Can you believe how easy it is? Can be done in less than an hour and not only that, the entire thing costs less than RM7.50! To be honest, this has become my favourite bib necklace for now *happy face*.

I like collecting and wearing accessories but the pretty ones always come with hefty price tags. Maybe other people would not see it expensive though but to me, spending more than RM30 for a piece of necklace is already considered as a splurge. One thing about fashion accessory is you could not wear it too often. Most of the time we have to match it with our outfits or ocassions and that is one reason why I don't like spending so much on a piece of 'art' that stays in the wardrobe longer than be seen. Let also not forget about the trends that come and go. From retro to rock chic to tribal to you-name-it-all... haiyaa how to cope and that is one HUGE reason why I like making DIY accessories.

We have seen peter pan collar during childhood especially on gowns and cotton smocking dresses. They are cute aren't they and I am glad that the adults can also wear them too nowadays in a form of necklace. I personally think peter pan collar reflects femininity and able to transform an outfit from boring to something. It is easier when it comes in a form of necklace because we can just match and wow any suitable outfit that we want to. I have to admit that peter pan collar necklace is among the easiest handmade necklace I have done so far and I am sharing my experience with you here.

Thanks to the internet and also creative individuals out there, finding a peter pan collar template is OSE aka. Oh So Easy. Got a template from kristyneale.typepad (thanks for sharing!) as a start and printed two shapes on an A4 paper. The shapes were cut accordingly and attached to felt cloth with needles. The next process was easy because I just need to cut the felt according to the shapes and the latter step was decorating it. The shapes were then attached with ribbons and ta-daa.....

Pink + Pearls = Perfect Pair

The entire process could be done in an hour actually but for a mother-with-a-toddler like me, it took me longer because I could only stick the pearls during leisure time. Started the night earlier and managed to complete it just after sahur yesterday. I was happy so I did not wait long and immediately wore it to the office.
